UC Santa CruzInformation Technology Services

Core Technologies Inactive/Closed Projects

Data Center Print Move - The current printing implementation in the Data Center is not viable and must be moved out. With the recent evaluation of Data Center Services, ITS Operations has the opportunity to rectify this problem by identifying/analyzing several options, and obtaining a decision from the ITS Senior Management Team to implement a solution that will meet the needs of the campus.

Data Center Monitoring - The UC Santa Cruz ITS Data Center's primary objective is to support 7 days a week 24 hours a day operations while simultaneously minimizing business risks from service disruptions.

Currently the ITS Data Center is accountable for the following;

  • Environmental Monitoring - HVAC/Leak detection, air flow, fire (FM200)
  • Power Monitoring/Energy Management - UPS/Generator systems; continuous evaluation of electric supply; power characteristics of computer systems; continuous capture of all events; identifying pattern changes and trends
  • Web/Application Monitoring - Applications up or down
  • Systems Monitoring - Hard Drives, power supply, tape back-up systems
  • Network Monitoring - SNMP traps, intrusion detection, network problems
The Operations group must be able to provide operators with a consolidated view of enterprise systems while simultaneously maintaining a business process view of data and networking systems. The enabling factor that is missing from the current ITS Data Center is Operations Management (Monitoring) Software.

Patch Management - Patch Management is a process by which systems in the network are secured by remotely managing, applying and maintaining critical patches and updates. Initially, we intend to focus on creating an automated Patch Management System for Windows O/S (WinTel) servers located within the ITS Data Center. Simultaneously, we will be partnering with interested Windows Server Administrators from around the campus in the development and documentation automated methodologies for WinTel server patch management.
