Outlook Express Settings for UCSC Google Email

These instructions are meant for setting up new accounts and configurations or for checking your settings. They are not intended to be used to migrate from POP to IMAP email settings. If you encounter difficulties, please contact the ITS Support Center

If you already have your email client or mobile device set up to use CruzMail, then on or after Nov. 14, all you need to do is change your settings to the following to point to your UCSC Google Email:

Username name@ucsc.edu - your full email address

Incoming Mail Server (IMAP, POP)
IMAP Recommended 

imap.gmail.com (for IMAP) pop.gmail.com (for POP) 
If you are not sure what to use, IMAP is recommended. 
SSL (Incoming) 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP)
Return Address (account name) name@ucsc.edu - your full email address
Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server smtp.gmail.com
Outgoing mail authentication Use Password Authentication (SMTP-AUTH)
Secure Password Authentication Do not use SPA
SSL (Outgoing or SMTP) Required, alternate port (465)

Outlook Express IMAP Configuration

  1. You can launch Outlook Express either by double-clicking on the Outlook Express icon on your desktop, or by going to Start -> Programs -> Outlook Express.
  2. Once the application has launched, select Accounts from the Tools menu.
  3. Select the Mail in the Internet Accounts window.
  4. In the Mail tab click on the Add button, and choose Mail .
  5. This will launch the Internet Connection Wizard. Enter your first and last name in the Display name field.
  6. Click Next. Enter your UCSC email address in the E-mail Address field. This address will be your account name@ucsc.edu.
  7. Click Next. In the E-mail Server Names window, choose IMAP from the Incoming Mail Server section drop down menu.
  8. The Incoming Mail Server address is imap.gmail.com
  9. The Outgoing Mail Server address is smtp.gmail.com
  10. Click Next. In the Internet Mail Logon section, enter your UCSC account name in the Account Name field, this is your full email address (name@ucsc.edu). 
  11. If you would like Outlook Express to save your password, enter your UCSC account password in the Password field and make sure the Remember Password box is checked. If you choose to save your password here, anyone with access to your computer will be able to check your email.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Click Finish in the Congratulations window to save your email client configuration settings.
  14. Once you have done this, Outlook Express will quit out of the Connection Wizard, leaving you back in your Internet Accounts window.
  15. Double click on your newly created account to open up the Properties window.
  16. In the Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
  17. The Outgoing Mail (SMTP) field should be set to port 465
  18. The Incoming Mail (IMAP) field should be set to port 993
  19. Check the box for Outgoing Mail that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  20. Check the box for Incoming Mail that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  21. Click on the Servers tab, and check My server requires authentication, then click the Settings button.
  22. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK
  23. Click on the Apply button to update these changes to your account, then click on OK .
  24. Exit out of the Internet Accounts window, and you can begin downloading your mail.

Outlook Express POP Configuration

  1. Make sure to first change your Google email settings to enable POP by logging into your email at http://email.ucsc.edu and follow these Instructions.
  2. You can launch Outlook Express either by double-clicking on the Outlook Express icon on your desktop, or by going to Start -> Programs -> Outlook Express.
  3. Once the application has launched, select Accounts from the Tools menu.
  4. Select the Mail in the Internet Accounts window.
  5. In the Mail tab click on the Add button, and choose Mail .
  6. This will launch the Internet Connection Wizard.
  7. Enter your first and last name in the Display name field.
  8. Click Next>.
  9. Enter your UCSC email address in the E-mail Address field. This address will be your account name@ucsc.edu.
  10. Click Next>.
  11. In the E-mail Server Names window, choose POP3 from the Incoming Mail Server section drop down menu.
  12. The Incoming Mail Server address is pop.gmail.com
  13. The Outgoing Mail Server address is smtp.gmail.com
  14. Click Next>.
  15. In the Internet Mail Logon section, enter your UCSC account name in the Account Name field, this is your full email address (name@ucsc.edu).
  16. If you would like Outlook Express to save your password, enter your UCSC account password in the Password field and make sure the Remember Password box is checked. If you choose to save your password here, anyone with access to your computer will be able to check your email.
  17. Click Next>.
