Thunderbird (Mac) Settings for UCSC Google Email

These instructions are meant for setting up new accounts and configurations or for checking your settings. They are not intended to be used to migrate from POP to IMAP email settings. If you encounter difficulties, please contact the ITS Support Center.
If you already have your email client or mobile device set up to use CruzMail, then on or after Nov. 14, all you need to do is change your settings to the following:

Thunderbird 2.xx IMAP Configuration
Creating a New Account
- Make sure that IMAP is enabled in your main UCSC Google email settings.
- Open the Thunderbird application from the Applications folder.
- Choose Email account from the first window.
- Click Continue
- Enter your first and last name into Your Name
- Enter your UCSC email address into Email Address.
- Click Continue
- Select IMAP as server type .
- Enter imap.gmail.com in the incoming server field.
- Enter smtp.gmail.com in the outgoing server field.
- Click Continue
- Enter your user name. This is your full email address, name@ucsc.edu.
- Click Continue
- Give your email account a generic name, such as UCSC Google Email.
- Click Continue.
- Verify that all the information matches.
- Click Done
- Go to the Tools menu, and choose Account Settings.
- Select Server Settings directly under the name of your new account.
- Verify that the Server Name is exactly imap.gmail.com.
- Verify that the Port used is 993.
- Enable Use secure connection (SSL)
- In the left side of the "Settings" window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
- Select the outgoing server, and them press "Edit".
- Verify that the Outgoing Server Name is smtp.ucsc.edu, and that the Port is 465.
- Enable Use name and password
- From the options below Use Secure Connection, select SSL
- Click OK to save your settings.
Thunderbird 2.xx POP Configuration
Creating New Account
- Make sure to first change your Google email settings to enable POP by logging into your email at http://email.ucsc.edu and follow these Instructions.
- Make sure that POP is enabled in your main UCSC Google email settings.
- Open the Thunderbird application from the Applications folder.
- Choose Email account from the first window.
- Click Continue.
- Enter your first and last name into Your Name
- Enter your UCSC email address into Email Address.
- Click Continue
- Select POP as server type.
- Enter pop.gmail.com in the incoming server field.
- Enter smtp.gmail.com in the outgoing server field.
- Click Continue
- Enter your user name. This is your full UCSC email address, name@ucsc.edu.
- Click Continue
- Give your email account a generic name, such as UCSC Google Email.
- Click Continue
- Verify that all the information matches.
- Click Done
Configuring Your New Account
- Go to the Tools menu and choose Account Settings.
- Select Server Settings directly under the name of that account.
- Verify that the Server Name is pop.gmail.com
- Verify that the Port used is 995.
- Enable Use secure connection (SSL)
- In the left side of the "Settings" window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
- Select the outgoing server, and then press "Edit".
- Verify that the Outgoing Server Name is smtp.gmail.com, and that the Port is 465.
- Enable Use name and password.
- From the options below Use Secure Connection, select SSL.
- Click OK to save your changes.
Thunderbird 3.xx IMAP Configuration (for Thunderbird 7 and 8)
- Make sure that IMAP is enabled in your main UCSC Google email settings.
- Launch Thunderbird
- Enter your full name and email address. Leave the password field blank.
- Click Continue.
- Click Stop under Looking up configuration and click the Manual Setup button.
An Account Settings Window will appear-
- Select Server Settings on the left part of the window.
- Set Incoming Server Name to imap.gmail.com or imap.googlemail.com
- Set the port number to 993.
- The User Name field should be your full email address, name@ucsc.edu.
- Under Security Settings select SSL/TLS from the drop down menu.
- Select Normal Password from the Authentication Method drop down menu.
- Select Outgoing Server from the left part of the window.
- Click Edit.
- Set Description and Server Name to smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com
- Set the port to 465.
- Select SSL/TLS from the Connection security drop down menu.
- Select Normal password from the Authentication method.
- Enter your CruzID into the User Name field.
- click OK.
