These instructions are meant for setting up new accounts and configurations or for checking your settings. They are not intended to be used to migrate from POP to IMAP email settings. If you encounter difficulties, please contact the ITS Support Center. 

If you already have your email client or mobile device set up to use CruzMail, then on or after Nov. 14, all you need to do is change your settings to the following:

Thunderbird 2.xx IMAP Configuration

Creating a New Account

1. Make sure that IMAP is enabled in your main UCSC Google email settings.
2. Open the Thunderbird application.
3. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
4. Select Add Account.
5. In the window that pops up, choose Email account.
6. Click Next
7. Enter your full name into Your Name
8. Enter your UCSC email address into Email Address.
9. Click Next
10. Select IMAP as server type .
11. Enter imap.gmail.com in the incoming server field.
12. Enter smtp.gmail.com in the outgoing server field.
13. Click Next
14. Enter your account name. This is your full UCSC email address, name@ucsc.edu. 
15. Click Next
16. Give your email account a generic name, such as UCSC Google Email.
17. Click Next.
18. Verify that all the information matches.
19. Click Finish

1. In the left side of the account settings window, find the name of your UCSC Google email account.
2. Select Server Settings directly under the name of that account.
3. Verify that the Server Name is exactly imap.gmail.com.
4. Verify that the Port used is 993.
5. Enable Use secure connection (SSL) 
6. In the left side of the "Settings" window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
7. Select the outgoing server, and them press "Edit".
8. The SMTP window will open. Verify that the Server Name is smtp.gmail.com, and that the Port is 465.
9. Enable Use name and password
10. From the options below Use Secure Connection, select SSL
11. Click OK to close the SMTP window
12. Click OK in the Accont Settings window to save your settings.

Thunderbird 2.xx POP Configuration

Creating New Account   

1. Make sure to first change your Google email settings to enable POP by logging into your email at http://email.ucsc.edu and follow these Instructions.
2. Open the Thunderbird application.
3. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
4. Select Add Account.
5. In the window that pops up, choose Email account.
6. Click Next.
7. Enter your full name into Your Name
8. Enter your UCSC email address into Email Address.
9. Click Next
10. Select POP as server type.
11. Enter pop.gmail.com in the incoming server field.
12. If applicable, enter smtp.gmail.com in the outgoing server field.
13. Click Next
14. Enter your account name. This is your full email address, name@ucsc.edu. 
15. Click Next
16. Give your email account a generic name, such as UCSC Google Email. 
17. Click Next.
18. Verify that all the information matches.
19. Click Finish

Configuring Your New Account

1. In the left side of the account settings window, find the name of your UCSC Google account.
2. Select Server Settings directly under the name of that account.
3. Verify that the Server Name is exactly pop.gmail.com
4. Verify that the Port used is 995.
5. Enable Use secure connection (SSL)
6. In the left side of the "Settings" window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
7. Select the outgoing server, and them press "Edit".
8. Verify that the Server Name is smtp.gmail.com, and that the Port is 465.
9. Enable Use name and password.
10. From the options below Use Secure Connection, select SSL.
11. Click OK.

Thunderbird 3.xx IMAP Configuration - (Use these instructions for Thunderbird 7 and 8)

1. Make sure that IMAP is enabled in your main UCSC Google email settings.
2. Launch Thunderbird
3. Select Don't Import Anything and click Next.
4. In the Mail Account Setup window, enter your full name and email address. Leave the password field blank.
5. Click Continue.
6. Click the Stop button in the Looking up configuration part of the next window.
7. Click Manual Setup.

 An Account Settings Window will appear

1. Select Server Settings on the left part of the window.
2. Set Server Name to imap.gmail.com or imap.googlemail.com
3. Set the port number to 993.
4. The User Name field should be set to your full email address, name@ucsc.edu. 
5. Under Security Settings select SSL/TLS from the drop down menu.
6. Select Normal Password from the Authentication Method drop down menu.
7. Select Outgoing Server from the left part of the window.
8. Click Edit.
9. Set Description and Server Name to smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com
10. Set the port to 465.
11. Select SSL/TLS from the Connection security drop down menu.
12. Select Normal password from the Authentication method.
13. Enter your CruzID into the User Name field. This is your full email address, name@ucsc.edu. 
14. click OK.
