How to Sign Up for Workshops

Workshops are available in person or on the web and are designed for UCSC instructors, graduate students and staff supporting instruction. Registration is required for participation and to receive advance course information. Please signup at least 48 hours in advance of workshop date. If there are no registrations two days in advance of the session, staff will cancel workshop. For questions about workshops contact the Faculty Instructional Technology Center: 459-5506.

Introduction to eCommons

Hands-on 90-minute workshop (offered online as a webinar and in person) covering these topics:
  • Logging in
  • Orientation to My Workspace
  • Creating a course site
  • Site Editor, Sections, Roster, Resources, Gradebook, Messages (email), Forums, Calendar, Announcements
  • Where to get help
  • Recorded Webinar (coming soon)
  • Prerequisite: Basic Browser and Computer Navigation.

eCommons Gradebook

Review gradebook configuration and the implications of the various options for setting up your gradebook. A comprehensive overview of gradebook functionality is provided including:

  • Adding, deleting and editing items
  • importing and exporting grades
  • Gradebook calculations
  • Best practices for eCommons gradebook 
  • Prerequisite: Familiarity with eCommons navigation.

eCommons Tests and Quizzes

Hands-on 90-minute workshop covering these topics:
  • Creating assessments (not “quick-create”)
  • Creating questions # Using Question Pools
  • Configuring settings
  • Creating Assessment Types
  • Previewing and publishing assessments
  • Audience: Users of eCommons who want to use the assessment tool.
  • Prerequisites: Have used eCommons in the past or have taken an eCommons introductory workshop. 

General eCommons Overview

Audience: Anyone who wants to know more about eCommons, but does not want hands-on training.

A 30-minute overview of eCommons and its capabilities. These sessions are arranged by request and are often presented during department meetings or at meetings of small groups. Upon completion, participants will know about the main tools available in eCommons and what resources are available to them to learn more about eCommons.

Videoconferencing

Learn the basics of videoconferencing whether it is in one of the built-in rooms at UCSC (McHenry 1336, Kerr 61, Comm. 143 and Delaware 138B) or from your own desktop at home.

Captioning

The basics of how to add captions your video files. Includes open source software to commercial options.

Record your own presentations

Learn how to record your own presentations, image and audio. Includes an overview of software and distribution options.
