Apple Mail Settings for UCSC Google Email

appleThese instructions are meant for setting up new accounts and configurations or for checking your settings. They are not intended to be used to migrate from POP to IMAP email settings. If you encounter difficulties, please contact the ITS Support Center. 

 

QUICK SUMMARY:

Username name@ucsc.edu - your full email address

Incoming Mail Server (IMAP, POP)
IMAP Recommended 

 imap.gmail.com (for IMAP) pop.gmail.com (for POP) 
If you are not sure what to use, IMAP is recommended. 
SSL (Incoming) 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP)
Return Address (account name) name@ucsc.edu - your full email address
Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server smtp.gmail.com
Outgoing mail authentication Use Password Authentication (SMTP-AUTH)
Secure Password Authentication Do not use SPA
SSL (Outgoing or SMTP) Required, alternate port (465)

IMAP Instructions (Recommended)

Step 1: Enable IMAP in your Gmail Settings

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click the gear in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  5. Select Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes.

Step 2: Configure your Apple Mail Email Client

If you see a prompt to add an account when you open Apple Mail, skip to step 5:

  1. Open the Mail app (Apple Mail icon) on your computer.
  2. Select the Mail menu at the top, and then Preferences.
  3. Open the Accounts section.
  4. Click the + button in the bottom corner.
  5. Choose Google.
  6. Type your first and last name.
  7. Type your full UCSC email address, (e.g. tasmith@ucsc.edu).
  8. Type your CruzID Gold password. If you use MFA with your account, you'll have to enter an app password.
  9. Click Set up.
  10. Make sure Mail is selected and click Done.

Step 3: Confirm your Settings

Confirm that the connection settings in Apple Mail client are the same as what's listed below.

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

  • Requires SSL imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993 Requires
  • SSL:Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Requires TLS smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465 or 587 Requires
  • SSL: Yes
  • Requires authentication: Yes
  • Use same settings as incoming mail server
  • Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
  • Account Name or User Name: your full UCSC email address (tasmith@ucsc.edu)
  • Email address: your full UCSC email address (tasmith@ucsc.edu)
  • Password: your CruzID Gold password
