Security Reminder about Personal Information

 Cornell University recently notified 45,000 people that their personal information had been exposed when a University-owned laptop was stolen. The Cornell Daily Sun
This incident is an excellent example of why ITS at UC Santa Cruz has a specific policy on storage and transmission of personal identity information (PII) located at: PII Policy
As a reminder, never download unencrypted PII to portable devices or media. Never store or access PII on a non-University computer. Unencrypted PII may only be stored temporarily on an ITS employee's desktop or laptop computer, and must be securely deleted on a regular (i.e. daily) basis.
This latest incident at Cornell University is also a reminder never to leave unsecured laptops or other portable devices unattended, even for a moment.
