Inside Plant Construction

The inside plant work consists of a construction component that will be facilitated by an outside contractor and a service component that will be facilitated by ITS. The contractors will be responsible for remodeling or installing new telecommunications closets, ensuring that all appropriate structural, electrical and mechanical components are addressed.

In buildings that do not have Category 5e wiring, the wiring to the desktops will be replaced with Category 6 wiring in order to ensure longevity and to facilitate gigabit service to the desktop. In many cases fiber riser will be run between floors in order to facilitate higher speed connections to the campus network routing infrastructure. The number of wireless access points will nearly quadruple in order to provide ubiquitous wi-fi service using 802.11n 100Mbs standards. Cable plant will be installed to enable even greater wireless density in the future as gigabit wireless becomes available with 802.11ac standards.

New Voice over IP telephones will be provided by ITS to all existing telephone users - these phones will also enable network connectivity by plugging the users computer into the network jack connected to the phone.

New high speed network equipment will be installed by ITS in the new or existing telecommunications closets to provide greater and more reliable network connectivity for building occupants. Two-hour uninterruptible power supplies will also be installed in closets to provide continued voice and data access during minor power outages. Major network hubs on campus that feed multiple buildings will have 8 hour battery backup, dual connections, and generator backed up power to ensure continued operation in the event of a power outage.

Status Update:Inside structured cabling was completed by Consolidated Networks.

WIRELESS ACCESS POINT UPADATE: The Phase A scope has been revised to reflect the addition of wireless access points (WAPs) in general assignement classrooms at the request of the Campus Committee on Computing and Telecommunications. The location and number or WAPs has been included in a table below.
