Collaborative Learning Environment

A new service model

The next UCSC instructional and collaborative system represents more than a simple choice of a technology platform. Faculty, students and staff see the new service as a framework for sharing resources, with full integration to administrative systems and data, library resources, and collaborative tools to advance teaching, learning and research at UCSC. They have envisioned an online presence, with single sign-on, that enables students to see course materials, communicate with instructors, participate in class activities, and review individual progress in a secure environment. Our faculty see the opportunity to decrease time spent on administrative tasks so they can focus their time and effort on teaching. The new Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) should enable this vision through integration with campus systems, a modern, easy to use interface, and pedagogically sound tools with opportunity for innovation. The current pervasive use of technology in teaching, learning and collaboration requires that UCSC invest in a robust infrastructure and support services that provides a 21st century education for 21st century students.

Our goal is to provide a consistent experience that supports the entire campus learning community – instructors, students and staff. That said, our primary goal is to first create a service for the instruction of students. Our new CLE should serve as a flexible enterprise system which acts as a platform and gateway to multiple teaching and learning applications and aids in minimizing the time and effort expended by faculty for normal course administration (grades, class rosters, basic communication.) The extensible and reusable nature of the project framework should be such that in developing expertise we might find interesting ways to expand beyond the features/functions of a CLE to integrate a larger suite of collaboration, research and repository tools in time. Being part of a community sourced application platform, allows us to work with others around the globe in solving like problems and shared innovation.

The first step in this process was the campus LMS Assessment Project and final report giving us the direction and guidance to select the platform for our new CLE -- Sakai, a collaboration and learning application for educators, by educators, free and open source. This enabled our next step, the Sakai Implementation Project begun February 2, 2009.
