Security Reminder Sent to Campus Faculty
December 2006
In response to a stolen laptop computer which contained the personal identity information of 125 students, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Kliger sent an email to campus faculty as a reminder "of the serious risk and individual responsibility associated with storing Social Security numbers and names on computers."
The email identified steps to help manage this risk...
- Remove older student information that includes Social Security numbers from computers - laptops and desktops both. One way to locate older class lists is to search your older email for messages from script@cats.ucsc.edu. Any that are older than September 1, 2004 are likely to be class lists with Social Security numbers.
- As laptops are particularly susceptible to theft, do not leave them unattended or unsecured at any time. Make sure they require a password to startup or wakeup. Keep them with you or lock them up before you step away, even for a very short time. Lockdown cables are available at the BayTree Bookstore.
- Report any stolen laptops or desktops immediately to Campus Police at 831-459-2231 to begin a police report. For more security awareness information please see the IT Security Awareness website. For technical support and questions, please contact your Divisional Liaison or the ITS Support Center at 459-4357 / help@ucsc.edu.
