Pine to CruzMail

Pine and Mail Folder Migration Utility

Individuals who wish to migrate their existing email folders from their UNIX Timeshare home directory to CruzMail can do so by using the Pine to CruzMail Folder Migration Utility. Although the utility is called "pine to cruzmail," it also works for UCB mail folders as well. Please follow the directions outlined below for proper use of the Pine to CruzMail Folder Migration Utility.

Important information about using Pine to CruzMail Folder Migration Utility:

  • When you migrate your email from your UNIX Time share home directory to CruzMail, all of your messages will have a new delivery or "received" date. The new delivery date will be the date and time that your messages were migrated into CruzMail. This is because the Pine to CruzMail Folder Migration Utility works by redelivering your email. This may cause the order of your email messages to appear differently from how they appeared in pine or mail .
  • You can use WebMail to view your migrated email in its original order by changing your "View Window" settings in the CruzMail "Options" section. For instructions on how to do this, please see the CruzMail User Guide.
  • Please use Pine to CruzMail Folder Migration Utility only once. If you run it twice, CruzMail will receive all of your email twice. In other words, you will have duplicate email. For example, if you have 200 messages in your inbox and you run the migration utility twice, you will have a copy of each of the 200 messages (i.e. 400 messages total). If you need to migrate additional email, please delete the folders that were already migrated, in order to avoid duplicates.

Pine to Cruzmail Instructions

Step 1: If you haven't already, activate your CruzMail account.

NOTE: The account activation process can take up to 24 hours to complete. Due to this, we recommend that you migrate your email folders once you have begun receiving new email at CruzMail.

Step 2: Launch the SSH Client and login to the timeshare unix.ic.ucsc.edu.

Step 3: Run the simple unix script to migrate your mail from pine to CruzMail.

Type the following command to migrate your mail folders from your home directory to CruzMail: /local/bin/pine2cruzmail.pl

Once you have typed the command and pressed Enter, you will see the following message:

Step 4: If you have correctly activated your CruzMail Account, the system will provide you the following message and prompt you for your UCSC email account password:

Once you have entered your account password, the script will begin migrating your email from pine to CruzMail. The script will show you a listing of all mail folders that it is moving to the new CruzMail Service. The time required to migrate your data from pine to CruzMail will depend on the total size of the data being moved. Once the script is finished running, you will be provided with a "transfer complete" message. At this time, you will want to login to CruzMail and view your transferred mail/mail folders.
