Pine with CruzMail

On the timeshare systems unix.ic.ucsc.edu and meow.ucsc.edu, pine has been updated so that it will download your email from either the old CATS POP server, cats-po-1.ucsc.edu, or the new email service, CruzMail. This pine change requires no additional action or steps on your part in order to use it. However, to use pine with CruzMail, first you must activate your CruzMail account. Individuals who wish to migrate their existing email folders from their UNIX Timeshare home directory to CruzMail can do so by following the Pine to Cruzmail instructions.

Important Information About Using Both Pine and Other Email Clients

Please note that if you attempt to use both pine and WebMail, or another email client, such as Eudora, Outlook Express, Apple Mail or Netscape Messenger, you will not be able to access that same email again via WebMail or other clients. This is because pine uses the Post Office Protocol (POP) to download your InBox from CruzMail, and does not support a Leave Messages On Server (LMOS) feature.

When pine downloads your CruzMail InBox via POP, it stores your InBox email in a file called "msgbox" in your timeshare home directory. Once you have downloaded your InBox from CruzMail with pine , the content of that InBox will no longer be available in WebMail, nor will it be available to other email clients for POP access.

To see how pine works with CruzMail, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: If you haven't already, activate your CruzMail account.

NOTE: The account activation process can take up to 24 hours to complete.

Step 2: Launch the SSH Client and login to the timeshare unix.ic.ucsc.edu.

Step 3: Launch pine.

When Pine is launched, it will prompt you for your login, and it will have your username in [brackets].

Step 4: Login to HOST: cruzmail.ucsc.edu. Accept the username in [brackets] or type in your username and hit enter. Then type in your password and hit enter. Pine will then download your email from CruzMail.

That's it! Once you have logged in, pine will download your email from CruzMail and store it in your home directory in "msgbox".
