Mozilla Thunderbird (POP) Configuration for Windows

Basic settings

Username your Cruz ID ( do NOT include @ ucsc.edu)
Incoming Mail Server cruzmail.ucsc.edu
Return Address <username>@ucsc.edu
Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server cruzmail.ucsc.edu


NOTE: These instructions are meant for setting up new accounts and configurations or for checking your settings. They are not intended to be used to migrate from POP to IMAP email settings. If you are already using software other than the CruzMail web page (https://cruzmail.ucsc.edu) to access your email at UCSC and you wish to change email clients and do not fully understand how to do so, then contact the Support Center for help.

Create a new account

  1. Open the Thunderbird application.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Select Add Account.
  4. In the window that pops up, choose Email account.
  5. Click Next.
  1. Enter your full name into Your Name
  2. Enter your cruzmail address into Email Address.
  3. Click Next
  1. Select POP as server type.
  2. Enter cruzmail.ucsc.edu in the incoming server field.
  3. If applicable, enter cruzmail.ucsc.edu in the outgoing server field.
  4. Click Next
  1. Enter your account name without the "@ucsc.edu"
  2. Click Next
  1. Give your email account a generic name, such as CruzMail or your email.
  2. Click Next.
  1. Verify that all the information matches.
  2. Click Finish

Configuring Your New Account

  1. In the left side of the account settings window, find the name of your CruzMail account.
  2. Select Server Settings directly under the name of that account.
  3. Verify that the Server Name is exactly cruzmail.ucsc.edu.
  4. Verify that the Port used is 995.
  5. Enable Use secure connection (SSL) :
  1. In the left side of the "Settings" window, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  2. Select the outgoing server, and them press "Edit".
  1. Verify that the Server Name is cruzmail.ucsc.edu, and that the Port is 465.
  2. Enable Use name and password
  3. From the options below Use Secure Connection, select SSL
  4. Click OK

Save your changes

  1. Click OK .
  2. This will close the account settings window for your email account.
