General Synchronization Configuration Tips
Oracle Certified Mobile Devices
CruzTime is UCSC’s version of Oracle Calendar which used to be called Corporate Time. You can synchronize your mobile device utilizing a wireless synchronizing technology called SyncML or OMA-DS. If your device has the necessary software you can follow the instructions provided by Oracle Corp (see links below) and synchronize your calendar with Cruztime.
Many cell phones have built-in SyncML (OMA-DS) support. The list on Oracle's "getting started" page (below) includes more than 60 phones which should work without any additional software. For a list of Oracle-certified mobile devices and general configuration information, go to
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/cs/user_info/omobile_collaboration/html/mobile_data_sync_get_started.html
If your mobile device does not come with the necessary software you will need to purchase the correct software to synchronize with CruzTime (Oracle Calendar).
Connecting to CruzTime with iPhones and iPods
iPhone and iPod users should go to www.synthesis.ch and read TOP NEWS and links provided for more information. Below is a basic guide based on information from Synthesis AG and augmented by user experimentation.
Synthesis AG www.synthesis.ch has released "Todo+Cal+Sync" application to the iTunes
store that actually allows you to sync to Cruztime. This is a two way sync, i.e., you can add an appointment on your iPod and it will show up on Cruztime after a sync). This is a $15 purchase.
These settings have worked for many users:
Server Settings
URL: https://cruztime.ucsc.edu/ocst-bin/ocas.fcgi
SyncML Version: SyncML 1.1
Ignore SSL errors: Off
User: your user name
Password: <your cruztime password>
Calendar
Sync Mode: Start with "Slow Sync"... automatically converted to "Normal Sync"
Server Path: ./calendar/events
Data range limits
Limit: On
Past days: 10 (or whatever you want)
Future days: 30 (or whatever you want)
Note: One issue with the application is that it does not bring over attendees. There have been requests to Synthesis AG to fix this.
See: http://www.synthesis.ch/todosync.php for instructions and demonstrations.
A manual and a short reference guide for Todo+Cal+Sync version 1.6.0 are available for download at http://www.synthesis.ch/iphone.php at the bottom of the page.
Connecting to CruzTime with Palm and Windows Mobile devices:
For PalmOS, PocketPC, and Windows Mobile: use Synthesis SyncML software
Synthesis AG provides SyncML clients for Palm and Microsoft Windows Mobile devices.
This software is available for purchase from Kagi.com.

Connecting to CruzTime with Blackberry devices using Nexthaus SyncJe Technology Version 2.4.7:
Nexthaus Corporation provides SyncML software for Blackberry devices called SyncJE. For the Blackberry, ITS recommends using SyncJe version 2.4.7 software from Nexthaus until further notice. SyncJE, is available for purchase from Nexthaus Corporation and version 2.4.7 is available for download if you are using the Blackberry browser at this location: http://nexthaus.com/bb/247/syncjebb.jad
SyncJE version 2.4.7 can also be downloaded to a computer and installed through BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Caution: although there is a new version available for SyncJE (version 3.2.4) a number of problems have been identified with Nexthaus SyncJE version 3.2.4 and it does not work well with our Oracle Calendar. Do not use this version for our Oracle Calendar Application, CruzTime. If you have version 3.2.4 of SyncJE installed on your device it should be removed before installing version 2.4.7
Version 2.4.7 of SyncJE has been tested by the Support Center and it works. SyncJE Version 2.4.7 can be directly downloaded to the device by pointing the Blackberry browser to: http://nexthaus.com/bb/247/syncjebb.jad and it is
available as a free download on at Nexthaus (click on the _Download v2.47_ words
under the free download button): http://nexthaus.com/products_b_blackBerry.html.
Or you can directly access the compressed file of this version at:
http://nexthaus.com/bb/bb_v247.zip
Nexthaus is working on a new version of SyncJE and they report their intention to fix the problems introduced in version 3.2.4. As soon as this new version is released and tested, ITS will provide links to install it.
Configuration Details:
SyncML server URL: https://cruztime.ucsc.edu/ocst-bin/ocas.fcgi
User Name: Your UCSC User ID
Password: Your Cruztime password
Settings: Contacts: ./Contacts
Calendar: ./Calendar/Events
To Do: ./Calendar/Tasks
IMPORTANT CONFIGURATION NOTES:
- Check "Skip Saving Attendees" box (avoids sending emails to everyone on every update)
- In addition, some Blackberry users may still have problems with unwanted update emails going out. If this happens, make the following changes:
Remove any “[CICAL]” service books from the device’s configuration.
Go to Options-->Advanced Options-->Service Books, and uncheck or remove all listings which end in “[CICAL]”
NOTE: These service books may be reinstalled later through your network service provider.
- Select the WAP option (and not MDS or BIS)
- Note: The default and maximum range for synchronizing the Blackberry is set to 30 days backwards and 30 days forward. If you’d prefer not synchronizing this much data, you can modify these values in the Nexthaus client.
See the Oracle link below for specific device information:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/cs/user_info/omobile_collaboration/html/mobile_data_sync.html
More information on SyncJE is available from Nexthaus at: http://www.nexthaus.com/blackberry.html
General Synchronization Configuration Tips:
- Switching Sync Methods:
It is best to be consistent in using sync methods rather than switching between OracleSync and SyncML. If you do switch between methods be sure to execute a “Full Sync” (OracleSync) or a “Slow Sync” (SyncML) each time you switch to a new method. Also, if you have changed any calendar data on your mobile device or on the CruzTime Web Client, do a sync using the same method as your last previous sync before changing methods.
- Repeating Meetings in CruzTime:
A repeating meeting created in Cruztime is reflected as a separate instance of that meeting on the mobile device after synchronizing using the SyncML Protocol.
- Changing Synthesis client date range:
If you change the Synthesis client date range, the next sync will be a “Slow” or “full” (complete) synchronization.
- Deleting items on Palm
If you (mistakenly) delete an item on the Palm Calendar and wish to restore it, perform a “Slow” or “Full” synchronization.
- Avoid sync interruptions:
Do not interrupt a SyncML synchronization because it could create an error condition that will require a soft system reset on your device.
- Error 503 when syncing with Oracle Calendar (CruzTime)
Error 503 means "service unavailable". This can happen if a previous synchronization attempt has recently failed. The Oracle Calendar server needs to time out the previous session before it can start a new one. Just wait about five minutes and try again.
