Server Hosting

We provide you with server hosting in the ITS Data Center and server administration services to support hosted servers. The data center is designed to function on a 24 hour, 7 day a week, 365 days per year basis.

Physical Security
The data center, located in the Communications Building, is physically isolated from everyone except technicians with approved access. Public access is forbidden. Entry is controlled by card key access. Servers are configured to fit in 19-inch cabinets. Cabinet space is assigned by the number of Rack Units (RU) required by each server. Cabinets can be sectioned off and secured in one-third, one-half and whole units.

Conditioned Power
Power systems in the data center are designed to run uninterrupted, even in the unlikely event of a total power outage. All servers are fed with conditioned Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) power that will provide a smooth transition to power provided by an on-site natural gas generator. In the event of an extended power outage, the generator can run indefinitely. The generator is regularly tested to ensure that it will continue to function at the time of an emergency.

Precision Environment
All air is circulated and filtered to remove dust and contaminants. The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is N+1 redundant to ensure continuous operation should one module be out of operation as a result of equipment failure or scheduled preventive maintenance. An advanced FM200 fire-suppression system is in place to prevent any fires from spreading — in the unlikely event that one could start. All cables to servers and routing equipment are securely tied down to cable racks suspended above the cabinets and cable conveyances contained within each cabinet.

Data Center Firewall
Firewalls limit access between computer networks based on security policies to protect sensitive servers and systems. We provide firewalling services for systems co-located within the Data Center from architecture and design to implementation, monitoring, and management.

Security Services

Server Backup and Recovery
Servers in the data center are backed up to disk and tape. Tapes are stored securely both on and off-site. Data center operators provide 24x7x365 availability for backup and recovery service.

Server Configuration Services
We provide needs assessment and requirements development for servers. We can specify server systems based on your needs and generate vendor quotes based on your requirements. You place the actual orders for servers.

Assistance for Dell, Sun, and Apple servers is also provided.

Server Monitoring in Data Center
Monitoring includes service to you for emergency situations that require additional assistance, such as servers, applications, back up, and disaster recovery.

Systems are classified as priority an non-priority for determining service levels:

  • Priority Systems: Monitored 7x24x365 by operations staff
  • Non-Priority Systems: Monitored by software but not actively monitored by staff

In addition, systems can receive two types of monitoring service:

  • Standard - Data center operators monitor server availability
  • Custom (Advanced) - Customers can monitor their own systems with customized tools
