Virtual Server Hosting
ITS has a limited number of virtual servers that can be used for test and/or development. Virtual servers are offered with Windows 2003 or Linux Redhat Rel5 only. Currently, these servers must be supported by ITS Core Tech System Administrators. They can be provided without the customer purchasing hardware or operating system (OS) software. The ITS virtual server farm is located in the UCSC ITS Data Center
Requesting a Virtual Server Virtual Servers can be ordered with 500MBb – 4GB of RAM and up to 50GB of disk storage (excluding OS). To request a Virtual Server submit a Virtual Server Request Form

New Virtual Server requests will be reviewed weekly. Scheduled delivery date of new Virtual Servers will be communicated to the requestor within 12 working days. Currently, all Virtual Servers are required to have ITS Core Technologies System Administration services.
Features and Functions Operations Monitoring - Data center operators monitor server availability 24x7

Backups – Daily incremental back-ups and weekly full backups are completed by the Operations staff for all virtual servers.

Firewall Protection - All virtual servers in the ITS Data Center are behind a firewall. Firewalls limit access between computer networks based on security policies to protect sensitive data on servers and systems.
Security UCSC policies and procedures related to protecting personal and confidential information are strictly adhered to for all servers in the ITS Data Center. Restricted and sensitive data includes:
  • Personal Identity Information (PII)
  • Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI & HIPAA)
  • Student Records Protected by FERPA (The Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974)
  • Credit Card Data

Anti-Virus Protection – All servers are required to have updated patched Operating systems with an anti-virus protection such as McAfee. For managed servers, the Core Tech Systems Administration group will ensure that the OS is patched, updated and has antivirus software installed.
