POP Mail Settings for Microsoft Outlook Express

The following instructions tell you how to check your secure POP email settings in Outlook Express. The software used was Outlook Express 6 in Windows XP with Service Pack 3 loaded.

1) Open Outlook Express, then select Tools and then select Accounts.

2) In the Internet Accounts window select the Mail tab, then select your email account from the Accounts list and then select Properties.

3) In the Account Properties window select the Servers tab. The incoming mail server will be set to POP3 - this cannot be changed unless you delete this account from Outlook Express and create a new account.

The server settings in this window should be as follows:

  • Incoming and Outgoing server should both be "cruzmail.ucsc.edu".
  • Account name should be your CruzID name: CruzID@ucsc.edu (do not include @ucsc.edu in this field)
  • Password should be your password. Check the box if you want Outlook Express to remember it.
  • Leave the box unchecked next to "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."
  • Check the box next to "My server requires authentication", then select the Settings button.

4) Select the Use same settings as my incoming mail server and then select OK.

5) In the Account Properties window select the Advanced tab.

Make sure to set the Outgoing mail (SMTP) to 465. The box "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" should be checked. Set the Incoming mail (IMAP) to 995. The box "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" should be checked. Once complete press the OK button.
