This tutorial will show you the recommended IMAP email settings for Windows Vista mail account within the Window's Vista built-in mail program, Windows Mail.
1) Open Windows Mail.
2) Click Tools > Accounts.

3) The Internet Accounts window will appear displaying the email accounts added to Windows Mail. Click on your CruzMail account, and then select Properties.

4) The cruzmail.ucsc.edu Properties window will appear which contains six tabs. First, select the General tab.
- The first text field is the name of the account in Windows Mail. It can be left at the default cruzmail.ucsc.edu or changed to something more descriptive.
- Name can be your name, or whatever text you'd like to be seen as your name when you send email.
- Organization can be left blank or changed to your specific department or division.
- Email address should be your UCSC email address: CruzID@ucsc.edu (CruzID = username)
- Reply address is the address that will appear when someone generates a reply to an email from you. Please leave blank, so replies will go to your UCSC email address.
- Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing should be checked.

5) Click on the Servers tab.
- Under server information, it should read: My incoming mail server is a [IMAP] server. The type of server (IMAP) was determined when you set up the account. You cannot change it unless you delete this account and create a new one.
- Both the Incoming mail (IMAP) and Outgoing mail (SMTP) fields should read cruzmail.ucsc.edu.
- E-mail username should be your CruzID; the part of your @ucsc.edu e-mail address before the '@'
- You can choose to enter your password in the Password field, and if Remember password is checked, the email client won’t ask you for your password every time you check your email. Otherwise, it will ask each time it sends/receives email.
- Log on using secure authentication should be left unchecked.
- My server requires authentication box should be checked.
- Click the Settings button.

6) Once you click on the Settings button, the Outgoing Mail Server window will appear.
- Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Click OK to return to the previous window.

7) Click on the Advanced tab.
Make sure that your settings match the following:
- Outgoing mail (SMTP): 465
- Incoming mail (IMAP): 993
- Both This server requires a secure connection (SSL) boxes should be checked.
- Server timeouts slider at the default 1 minute position.
- Break apart messages larger than should be unchecked.

8) Lastly, click on the IMAP tab.
- Root folder path should be blank.
- Check for new messages in all folders should be checked.
- Store special folders on IMAP server should be checked, and the four paths can be left as the default entries.

Press OK to close the Properties window.
You’re finished setting up your Windows Mail for Vista to properly retrieve your CruzMail email via IMAP.
