Printer Request Form Instructions

The following instructions are provided to help you as you fill out the the Printer Request Form to add a printer to the network. Please see the explanations below for each area on the web form.

Administrative Support Service Center: This is the name of the administrative group that supports your unit. Large units usually have their own service center; administrative support for small units are often combined and supported by a joint service center.

Contact for printer: The contact name is usually the name of the person who sits closest to the printer, so that when someone tests the printer remotely, they can be contacted to check if anything prints out. If you do not know who to put down, enter the name of the computing coordinator for your unit.

Printer Information Brand/Model: Please enter the brand name and model number of your printer as completely as you can, i.e.: HP LaserJet 4M Plu

IP address: You must request an IP address and IP name via hostnames.ucsc.edu. Once your IP address has been assigned and registered, return to this page to set up network printing to it. Appletalk printers: We no longer offer printing via appletalk. All networked printers require a static IP address.

UNIX printer site code: Printer name as it is displayed in FIS, PPS and other applications. Invent a unique UNIX printer site code such that users could pick their printer from a list of printers. "hp4mplu" is not a good UNIX printer site code; "cborm23" is. The UNIX printer site code must be unique to UCSC, can't be more than eight characters, must be lowercase, and can use only the following two special characters, the hyphen ( - ) and the underscore ( _ ).

Burst page: Before you answer no too quickly, note that burst pages are useful to determine if a job was successful. Some jobs might not print any pages. Without a banner page, you will never know if the job terminated successfully.

Reverse order: This question can be confusing, because it depends on which printer paper outlet you intend to use (it is somewhat easier if your printer only has one paper outlet). Some paper outlets require page reversal, while others don't. In addition, some application software will reverse the page order (either by default or on demand). So you might need to do some testing to decide exactly what you want (and correct it later if need be).

Additional step for PPS: The final step is to have each of your PPS users invoke the PRNT function from within PPS. They will be presented with a screen which lists all the printers available. After your printer has been setup by ITS, it should be on this list. Move the cursor to the field to the left of the printer to be used and press enter. After the message comes back that the input has been accepted, press PF5 to cause the update to happen. Questions regarding PPS printing setup and usage should be addressed to ITS Support Center.
