Your Telephone Line
Telecommunications provides telephone service in each campus residential bedroom.
You can use your residential telephone to place free campus, local, and toll-free
calls. You must use a calling card to place long distance calls. Telephone numbers
are distributed by the Housing or Residential Life office at the college where
you live. You may have received your telephone number in the mail, or it may
have been given to you with your key and other move-in materials. If you have
lost your telephone number, check with your roommate to see if he or she knows
it before contacting your Housing or Residential Life office.
NOTE: Along with your telephone number, you should receive a telephone jack
number. Be sure to plug your telephone into the jack labeled with this number,
as it will not work in any other jack.
| Emergency |
Dial 911 |
| Important Note: Dialing 911 from a cellular phone will not connect you
immediately to UCSC campus emergency services. To ensure the fastest response
time, announce that you are on the UC Santa Cruz campus as soon as you are
connected so that your call can be transferred as quickly as possible. Alternately,
you may dial (831) 459-2345 to be immediately connected to campus emergency
services. |
| On Campus |
Dial the last five digits of the telephone number |
| All campus telephone numbers begin with one of two prefixes, 502 or 459. |
| Examples: To call 502-1234, dial 2-1234. To call 459-1234, dial 9-1234. |
| Local |
Dial 6 + seven digit number. |
|
Always dial 6 for off-campus calls. For example, to call 426-7500, dial
6-426-7500
Note: Not all numbers in the 831 area code are considered "local"
calls. The local calling area for Santa Cruz is approximately from Boulder
Creek to Aptos. Calls to Watsonville, Salinas, Monterey and other cities
to the south are chargeable calls. You must use a calling card to call
these cities.
|
| Toll-Free |
Dial 6 + 1 + Toll-Free Area code + Seven-digit number |
| Your telephone allows toll-free dialing to area codes 800, 877 and 888. |
| Long Distance |
Use a calling card to place all long distance calls (click
here to find the area code for any US or Canadian City) |
| You must use a calling card that can be accessed by dialing a toll-free
number to make long distance calls. Dial the toll-free number for your calling
card (see Toll-Free instructions above), and then follow the dialing directions
on your calling card. |
| Directory Assistance |
Campus directory- Dial 9-2114 (from off campus, dial (831) 459-2114) |
| A calling card is required to dial off-campus directory assistance, since
there is a charge for these calls. Directory assistance in the United States
can be reached by dialing the area code, then 555-1212. For example, for
the Santa Cruz area, the number is (831) 555-1212. You can avoid a charge
for directory assistance by using a web-based directory assistance service
such as www.infousa.com |
