Telephone Services and Features for Students

Your Telephone Line

Each campus residential bedroom is equipped with one or two telephone lines. Single and double rooms have one telephone line, while triple and quadruple rooms have two telephone lines. A voicemail box is also assigned to each telephone line. The campus telephone system also includes several features that are included with your basic telephone service.

Telephone Jacks

Each communications wall outlet contains multiple jacks. The telephone jack in the outlet is labeled with a jack number containing a '-V-', e.g. 123-V-015. Plug your telephone into this jack. The other jack or jacks in the outlet are for computer connections.
Some buildings have more than one outlet per room. In all single and double rooms, only one of the voice jacks will have dial tone. When you receive your telephone number from your college Housing or Residential Life office, you should also receive a telephone jack number. Be sure to plug your telephone into the jack labeled with this number, as it will not work in any other jack.

Triple/Quadruple Room Residents

In a triple or quadruple room, there are two active telephone lines. The additional line will either be on a separate jack elsewhere in the room or on the right side of a line splitter. Refer to the telephone jack number provided with by your college to see which telephone number is assigned to which jack. If you live in a triple room, you should plug telephones into each of the two active jacks. This will make it possible for two roommates to be on the phone at the same time. Splitter devices are University property and should be left in the jack at all times. Room residents will be charged for replacement if the splitter is removed.

Line Splitter- Triple/Quadruple Room Residents should plug telephones into both sides.

Telephone Instruments

You or your roommate must provide a touchtone telephone. You may use a cordless telephone, speakerphone or other telephone equipment, provided it has been FCC-approved and does not require modification of the telephone outlet or wiring.

Telephone Equipment for People with Hearing Impairments
Telephone equipment (such as TTYs) for people with hearing/speech impairments will function with the UCSC telephone system. If you need assistance setting up your equipment, please email us at NetTel@ucsc.edu.
