UCSC Telecommunications maintains and repairs all telephone lines up to the
wall jack in each room. Telecommunications will not repair customer-provided
telephone instruments, line cords or other equipment under any circumstances.
The Troubleshooting Guide below for common
problems that may be caused by customer-provided equipment or user error. Before
calling telephone repair, find your telephone problem and follow the appropriate
steps to make sure that your equipment is not the cause of your telephone trouble.
If a Telecommunications technician makes a service call to your room and the
problem is traced to your line cord or equipment, you will be billed for the
repair visit. Room residents will be charged for any modification or damage
to the communications outlets, jacks, or wiring.

Troubleshooting Guide
If you are experiencing a problem with your telephone, it may be due to a
malfunction of your telephone instrument or other equipment. Here are some simple
tests you can do to determine the source of the problem.
Select Your Problem:
No Dial Tone
Unable to Dial Off Campus
Telephone Does Not Ring
Static on Line
No Dial Tone
| Possible Cause |
Test or Solution |
|
Telephone not plugged into jack
|
Make sure that line cords are plugged in to all equipment.
|
|
Telephone plugged into wrong jack
|
Make sure that your telephone is plugged into correct
jack. Telephone jacks in most residential rooms are beige, while ethernet
jacks are orange. You should have received a telephone jack number when
you received your telephone number. If there are multiple telephone jacks
in the room, make sure that your telephone is plugged into the jack labeled
with this number. The telephone will not work in any other jack. Keep
in mind that there is only one active jack (which is shared by both residents)
in a double room (See Telephone Jacks for more information). If there
are more than two residents in the room, see Triple/Quadruple Room Residents.

Hang up and wait several minutes. Dial tone should return.
