Personal Pages: Features

Personal pages have the following features.  Please note, personal web pages may not be used for political or commercial purposes and may not include copyrighted material.

  • The central web server is hosted in a controlled environment with power management and daily backups. Backups are rotated and periodically stored off-site for disaster recovery.
  • Each faculty, staff and student can host their own web pages on the ITS people.ucsc.edu server.
  • Each web directory supports PHP and server side includes (but not executables).
  • The web server has some centrally supported cgi-bin scripts:
  • Mailform: to deliver form contents to an e-mail address.
  • Counter: to create a counter on a page.
  • Weblog_report: to track page usage.
  • Redirect: to redirect pages to other URLs.
  • There is a search index set up for each unit which is updated every night (swish-e).
  • There are weekly weblog reports to keep track of how often your pages are visited.
  • There is support for additional MIME types such as the following (others may be available by request):

Acrobat files

DWF

AutoCAD files

RA, RAM, RPM

Real Audio files

DCR, DIR, DXR, SWA

Shockwave files

WRL

VRML files

Limited support is available for personal pages through the ITS Support Center.
