Web Hosting Features

Web hosting services are available administrative departments who create and maintain their own web applications, but would like a central ITS environment to host them. Web hosting provides the following features. (Support for additional features may be available on a recharge basis.)

  • The central web server is hosted in a controlled environment with power management and daily backups. Backups are rotated and periodically stored off-site for disaster recovery.
  • Each unit has an individual directory on the server and, with approval of the Office of Public Information, can also have a virtual host name (for example:  “unit_name.ucsc.edu” instead of “www2.ucsc.edu/unitname”
  • Units who need SSL certificates to encrypt sensitive information traveling over the network can utilize the ITS web server certificate. The server may NOT be used to store SSN or credit card numbers, however.
  • Each unit has two groups associated with their web directory: a group of web administrators, and a group of web authors. The web administrators select the web authors (and other properties). Only web authors have write access to the web directory itself (via ssh or sftp).
  • Each web directory supports PHP and server side includes (but not executables).
  • The web server has some centrally supported cgi-bin scripts:
    • mailform: to deliver form contents to an e-mail address.
    • Counter: to create a counter on a page.
    • weblog_report: to track page usage.
    • redirect: to redirect pages to other URLs.
  • Each unit can furnish and manage their own custom cgi-bin scripting (e.g. in Perl) by request.
  • There is a search index set up for each unit which is updated every night (swish-e).
  • There are weekly weblog reports to keep track of how often your pages are visited.
  • There is support for additional MIME types such as the following (others may be available by request):
    PDF Acrobat files
    DWF AutoCAD files
RA, RAM, RPM Real Audio files
DCR, DIR, DXR, SWA Shockwave files
    WRL VRML files
