Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Support
Snow Leopard Support Begins on November 4th, 2009
ITS, in collaboration with members of the UCSC community, has been evaluating
and testing OS X 10.6, or Snow Leopard, since its release by Apple on August 28th, 2009.
Though ITS currently suggests that Mac users continue to use OS X 10.5.x - Leopard -
until all testing is complete, we understand the need for early support as Apple now ships Snow Leopard
on all new Macs. To meet that need, ITS will begin offering support for Snow Leopard on November 4th, 2009.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
If you are considering upgrading to Snow Leopard, please review the following information before making your decision.
Steps to Upgrading
- Determine hardware and software compatibility.
- Order necessary licenses.
- Once you've received the necessary licenses, open an ITS Request for installation.
Once a ticket to request installation has been placed, you will be contacted by an ITS Support Center Technician
to schedule the upgrade.
Will My Hardware & Software Work With Snow Leopard?
Minimum General Hardware Requirements:
- Mac Computer with an Intel processor
(PowerPC-based Macs are not able to run Snow Leopard)
- 1 GB of RAM
- 5 GB of available disk space
- DVD drive for installation
Specific features may have additional hardware requirements. Please review the
complete list of feature specific requirements .
If you would like assistance with this, please contact the ITS Support Center.
Supported Printers
Apple has included a comprehensive set of print drivers in Snow Leopard, though print drivers may not
be available for some specific models. To see if your printer is supported, please review the
10.6 Printer and Scanner Software support page.
If your printer model is not listed, use the manufacturer's link provided on that page to see if your
printer's manufacturer has released a driver for Snow Leopard.
Supported Software
Apple has published a list of non-supported software.
Please keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive list. Though the standard applications in use by
the UCSC community should work, including current versions of Microsoft Office
and Adobe Acrobat, users of specialized software should first check with their
software manufacturer to determine compatibility.
