Microsoft Purchase Options
Microsoft Select: Single license purchases for desktops, laptops and servers purchased through UC’s preferred reseller SHI. Select licenses are perpetual, you own the license outright. Version upgrade maintenance, called Software Assurance (SA) can also be purchased.

MCCA, Microsoft Consolidated Campus Agreement: The MCCA annual Microsoft licensing program licenses an entire Knowledge Worker FTE count of a Division, Department, Unit, School or College for specific Microsoft software products. Licensed FTE can install the latest version of the software they license on all the university owned computers that they use. Server Software can also be licenses annually under MCCA. Each spring the FTE is counted and a renewal order is placed through ITS Software Licensing. For a list of MCCA licensed departments please visit the MCCA page.

The Bay Tree Bookstore sells Microsoft software at standard academic prices. Personal use Microsoft software can also be purchased online at http://ucsc.onthehub.com (registration with UCSC email required)
Microsoft OS in a Virtual Environment
Running XP Pro or Vista using Parallels, Fusion or Bootcamp requires a Windows OS Upgrade License and Software Assurance (SA). Licenses should be purchased from SHI. Units licensed under MCCA Desktop are licensed and eligible. Downgrade rights allow for XP Pro installation with a Vista SA license.
Software Assurance
Microsoft calls their version upgrade program Software Assurance or SA. Purchasing SA with a perpetual license allows you to upgrade to any new version that is released by Microsoft during the UC contract term. The current contract term expires January 31, 2011. SA can be repurchased in 2011 to continue to provide upgrade benefits for the next 3 year term.
Home Use Program
Staff and Faculty licensed under MCCA or Software Assurance (SA) are eligible to participate in the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP).

Under the Home Use Program, employees who are licensed under MCCA for Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 may acquire a licensed copy of the corresponding Home Use Program software to install and use on a home computer. You may continue using HUP software while you are under UC employment and as long as the corresponding software you use at work has active MCCA coverage. For Windows OS or other titles, licenses can purchase from Bay Tree Bookstore or http://ucsc.onthehub.com, proof of UC affiliation is required during registration.
