PRE-MIGRATION STEPS

All Eudora users should go through these steps before their migration whether doing it themselves or requesting assistance. These preliminary steps will make for a smoother migration. If you have questions about any of these steps, please contact the Help Desk.

  • Check with your Divisional Liaison or local ITS staff to see if there is already an established email migration plan for your area.
  • IMPORTANT - Create an archive of your Eudora folder. You will need to locate this folder on your computer and make a copy of it. (On a Mac, that would be <username>/Documents/Eudora Folder. On a PC, pull down the Help menu to About Eudora... and the folder's location will be listed by "Data:".) Either save this copy to another location on your computer, a networked drive (if available) or an external flash drive.
  • Clean up existing mailboxes and organize folders. Check for duplicate folder names in sub-folder. Sub-folders with the same name could lose mail in the migration. Also, check for non-letter characters in folder names. "*" and "&" don't migrate well.
  • Delete Trash and Junk/Spam mail -- less to migrate!
  • Run a virus scan on your Eudora folder
  • If you want to keep the “new” status of your mail (some use this as a “still to do” status), then you should move those messages to a newly created folder. This is because the migration will mark all mail as "new" when it transfers from Eudora.
  • Nickname groups in Eudora need to include actual email addresses as opposed to nicknames. These groups will not transfer correctly in migrations.
  • Please plan to devote some time to your migration. If you have several years of email, it may take a few hours.

Migration options

DO IT YOURSELF

ITS has created self-help instructions for Windows users who want to migrate to Thunderbird using POP and for Mac users who want to migrate to Apple Mail using POP. If you are not sure if you are using POP, please visit the POP and IMAP Information webpage.

Please review the Pre-Migration Steps above before starting your migration.

For Windows users migrating to Thunderbird using POP: Self-Help PC Instructions (PDF format)

For Mac users migrating to Apple Mail using POP: Self-Help Mac Instructions (PDF format)

For all other migrations, including to IMAP and/or other supported email programs, requesting ITS assistance is recommended.

REQUESTING ITS ASSISTANCE

If at any time you feel that you need help or have questions, please take note of where you are in the migration process, and contact the ITS Help Desk by submitting a ticket at itrequest.ucsc.edu, calling 459-HELP, or sending an email to help@ucsc.edu. The ITS Help Desk is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

FAQS

When did ITS support end for Eudora?

ITS support for Eudora ended on January 30th, 2009.

What email programs are supported by ITS?

For the PC, ITS supports Thunderbird, Outlook 2003/2007, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

For the Mac, ITS supports Apple Mail (for both Tiger 10.4 and Leopard 10.5) and Thunderbird.

If you are undecided, ITS is recommending Thunderbird for PCs and Apple Mail for Macs.

What if I decide not to migrate?

There are some important reasons to migrate off of Eudora:

  • No vendor support. Since Qualcomm stopped supporting Eudora in October 2007, if there was an error or conflict with another program, there would be no vendor resources for fixing it.
  • No security updates. UCOP policy states that essential UC software must have regular security updates. They are no longer forthcoming from Qualcomm.
