Course Directories

Description

Course directories are used to store and share course materials on-line. Homework/class directories are used to accept homework on-line. These directories are used mostly by instructors and TAs teaching programming courses on UNIX. See Other links below for other options.

Requesting the Service

Request a course and/or a homework/class locker. The instructor and any TAs must have UCSC IDs to be able to store files in the course locker and to manage homework submissions.

Training

No training in using course or homework/class directories is offered.

Documentation

See the handout Managing class-course lockers for instructors and TAs for more information on how course directories work.

Service Provided By

Course directories are supported by ITS.

Cost

Course directories are centrally funded.

Instructors may also set up course web pages and newsgroups. See also the Course management system info (WebCT)

Form help

Tell us the name of your course as normally abbreviated by the Registrar's Office, and the initials of the instructor. These two pieces of information will become the name of the locker. The course locker exists forever (i.e. as long as the course is listed in the catalog of courses), while the homework/class locker only exists for a specific quarter (and goes away once the quarter is over).

The instructor is the owner and main administrator for the course and homework lockers, i.e. the person who will maintain the files within the course locker (most likely the name of the person filling out this page). If you plan to have individuals (e.g. TAs) other than the instructor who need to be able to write in the course locker, they must be included in the course locker group. The instructor controls who is in the course locker group with the listmaint program; this group is also a mailing list so that you can communicate easily with all your TAs.

Lockers normally have a quota of 15 MB. If you need more disk space, tell us how much additional space you need in 5 MB increments. This will help us allocate your locker among the file systems.

Enter any additional instructions for the ITS locker administrator in the Comments field.

The ITS locker administrator will notify you when the locker becomes active. If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Support Center, x9-4357, or send mail to help@ucsc.edu.
