Hosting Review & Approval

Background

One of the responsibilities of ITS is to manage the Data Center capacity for the campus.

Metrics and Tools

The ITS Data Center Operations team tracks Data Center capacity and projects utilization for future projects. These documents are used as tools to help in deciding if a new hosting request can be accommodated in the Data Center.

Criteria

Approval of a hosting request generally depends on whether the new equipment will fit within available space/cooling/power capacities without impacting other approved hosting requests.

Other reasons that a request may be denied include:

  • Lack of capacity for the hosting
  • The hosting request would conflict with requests that have already been approved
  • The hosting request could successfully be deployed within the ITS Virtual Hosting Service
  • The hosting request could be consolidated into existing hardware
  • The hosting request employs old equipment that does not provide reasonably modern power efficiency and reduced heat generation
  • The hosting request is for an operating system that is no longer under support (or is close to being off support)
  • The hosting request does not comply with the intent of ITS's project portfolio, or is not considered to be in the best interest of the campus

Approvers

Jocelyn Ferialdi - Data Center Manager
Bill Storey - Infrastructure Portfolio Manager

The Decision Process

Each request is evaluated separately.

If a conflict arises over a Data Center hosting request, the Data Center Operations team will escalate the request to the ITS Senior Management Team for resolution.
