IT Project: VMware Transition
This project will transition supported VMware-based virtual hosting platforms to alternative solutions due to changes in the vendor, VMware’s licensing, and cost structure.
Impacts
- Cost optimization and financial sustainability
- Reduced hardware and hosting footprint, lower infrastructure management overhead, and a usage-based cost model
- Changes in recharge costs with migration to AWS. Some customers will benefit from the recharge to AWS cost shift, others will not.
- Reducing the on-premise hardware footprint on campus.
Approach
- Follow two parallel migration strategies:
- Migrate to AWS where possible.
- Identify and implement alternative on-premise programs (hypervisor) used to run and manage virtual machines for applications not suitable to run on AWS.
