Deadline extended for Google Storage

Google Drive files owned by former UC Santa Cruz students and employees will be permanently deleted to free up storage space next fall, on October 15, 2026. These impacted files are labeled “To Be Deleted.”

Original deadline extended one year

In June, this information was communicated to campus users with a deadline of October 2025. However, after receiving feedback that the process to address files slated to be deleted was time consuming and challenging, we decided to extend the deadline to October 2026. This will give us time to implement improved tools and resources to help make this process easier.

Next Steps – Use Google Shared Drive

ITS will share updates on tools and method improvements for these files in the coming months. In the meantime, we encourage the use of Google Shared Drives for any content that should be preserved after staff and students leave the university to avoid risk of loss. Learn more about how to use Shared Drives in this knowledge article Google Drive: My Drive vs. Shared Drives.

Thank you for doing your part to reduce your storage footprint. Your efforts along with sophisticated technical improvements have brought our campus much closer to reaching our goal of long-term storage sustainability.
