How to use Campus VPN with MFA (after enrollment)

Quick Guide for Campus VPN Connection

  1. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  2. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.

Next

  1. Enter your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.
  2. You will then enter a passcode or MFA keyword to complete multi-factor authentication (MFA). The keywords and other information will presented in your login interface.

Duo Mobile App - Push Notification (recommended and most commonly used)
Text Message (SMS) - texting charges may apply
Phone Call - charges may apply
Hardware Token
Duo Mobile App - Passcodes

 


DUO Mobile App - Push Notification (recommended)


Steps that are the same as usual Campus VPN process:

  1. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  2. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.
  3. Select your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.

    4. Enter the word "push" in the box labled Second Password or MFA.
    5. Click OK.

Steps that are the same as usual MFA process:

    6. An alert will display on your smartphone or tablet. (this is the MFA process as normal)
    7. Tap Approve (or Accept + Confirm) to authenticate.
    8. VPN connection completed.

To receive an alert on your backup smartphone or tablet (not default) device enter 'push2' into the Second Password or MFA field.

DUO Mobile App - Passcodes

Steps that are the same as usual Duo Mobile and Campus VPN process:

  1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Tap the key icon to generate a passcode.
  3. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  4. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.
  5. Select your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.

    6. Enter the passcode in the box marked Second Password or MFA.
    7. Click OK.
    8. VPN connection completed.

Text Message (SMS)

Steps that are the same as usual Campus VPN process:

  1. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  2. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.
  3. Select your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.

    4. Enter the word "sms" in the box marked Second Password or MFA.
    5. Click OK.
    6. The Cisco AnyConnect box will refresh, erase all entered information, and display 'Login failed.'
    7. You will receive a series of single use passcodes on the SMS-capable phone listed first in your MFA profile.
    8. Re-enter your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.
    9. Enter the SMS passcode into the box marked Second Password or MFA.
    10. Click OK.
    11. VPN connection completed.

To receive a text message to your backup (not default) device enter 'sms2' into the Second Password or MFA field.

Phone Call

Steps that are the same as usual Campus VPN process:

  1. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  2. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.
  3. Select your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.

    4. Enter the word "phone" in the box marked Second Password or MFA.

    5. Click OK.

Steps that are the same as usual MFA phone process

    6. You will receive a telephone call from 831-459-4357 to the telephone number listed first in your MFA profile.
    7. Answer the telephone and immediately press 1 to authenticate.  (If using a landline, it may be necessary to            first enable tones)
    8. VPN connection completed.

To receive a phone call to your backup (not default) device enter ‘phone2’ into the Second Password or MFA field.

Hardware Token, or any Passcode entry

Steps that are the same as usual MFA hardware token process:

  1. Use your hardware token to generate a passcode.

    3. Select "vpn.ucsc.edu" for the VPN profile.
    4. Select your CruzID and Gold password in the boxes marked Username and Password, respectively.
