Thunderbird Settings for UCSC Google Email

QUICK SUMMARY:

Username name@ucsc.edu - your full email address

Incoming Mail Server for Thunderbird (IMAP, POP)
IMAP Recommended 

imap.gmail.com or imap.googlemail.com (for IMAP) pop.gmail.com or pop.googlemail.com (for POP) 
If you are not sure what to use, IMAP is recommended. 
SSL (Incoming) 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP)
Return Address (account name) name@ucsc.edu - your full email address
Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com
Outgoing mail authentication Use Password Authentication (SMTP-AUTH)
Secure Password Authentication Do not use SPA
SSL (Outgoing or SMTP) Required, alternate port (465)

IMAP Instructions (Recommended)

Step 1: Enable IMAP in your Gmail Settings

Step 2: Open Thunderbird, enter your account information and click Continue.

  1. Full Name: [your first and last name]
  2. Email Address: your full UCSC email address [tasmith2@ucsc.edu]
  3. Password: your CruzID Gold password. If you have 2-Step Verification on your account, enter an app password into this field instead.

Thunderbird will do all of the setup for you, but confirm your settings with the information below.

Step 3: Confirm the Server Settings

In Thunderbird, open the Account Settings (Tools | Account Settings) and select the Server settings.

Incoming Server Settings:

  • IMAP server: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • Security type: SSL (always)
  • Authentication: OAuth2

Outgoing Server Settings:

  • SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • Security type: SSL (always)
  • Authentication: OAuth2
