Campus telephones and potential life safety issue

May 25, 2022

ITS is nearing completion of a project to upgrade most campus telephones to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). While VoIP provides several benefits to the campus, there are some differences in service that users need to be aware of.

Potential Life Safety Issue

The UCSC Police Department, in partnership with ITS, is asking that you please do not move your campus telephone yourself.

Some users have discovered that they can move and connect their VoIP telephone to other network jacks on campus. While this may seem like a benefit, it is creating some safety issues with the accuracy of E911 location data. If a campus VoIP phone is moved without the knowledge of ITS, the location data provided to first responders will be inaccurate. This may result in a potential life safety issue.

If you moved your campus telephone as described above, please contact ITS immediately so that we can map the actual location of your phone with 911 location data. If you plan on moving your telephone in the future, ITS will be happy to assist you.
