Criminals Spoof Scanners & Printers

January 10, 2018

Criminals spoof scanners and printers by the millions to spread malware.

Cybercriminals are spoofing scanners by the millions to launch attacks containing malicious attachments that appear to be coming from the network printer.

Emails are sent with subject lines such as "Scanned from HP" and containing a PDF attachment. Emailing scanned documents may be a common occurrence for many so not perceived as a threat.

These attacks were first noticed in late 2017. The attachment provides attackers with the ability to initiate covert surveillance or gain unauthorized access to a victim’s computer.

Be cautious about opening an attachment on any email that you are not specifically expecting.
