Limitations
- Do not duplicate existing surveys. The campus currently has several major survey programs in place which are managed by Institutional Research, Assessment, and Policy Studies (IRAPS).
- Do not request confidential or regulated information in a survey. Qualtrics CoreXM should not be used to request personally identifiable information (PII) unless coordinated with existing campus regulatory compliance and health governance teams.
- Protect identities. Reporting responses to open-ended questions should always be paraphrased to protect the respondents' identities.
- Provide secure options. When members of the UC Santa Cruz community, including students, alumni, faculty, or staff, are invited to take an online survey, they should receive either an email with a personalized survey link, or they should be directed to log in through the UC Santa Cruz Gold CruzID to ensure additional security.
Accessibility
When creating surveys, ensure your information is available to the broadest possible audience. Several question types are not accessible.
You should run the Qualtrics Accessibility Tool to ensure that you only have accessible question types in your survey. Some simple ways to improve accessibility:
- Use a list instead of radio buttons.
- Make sure questions are numbered (the auto-number option is handy for this)
- Change the default next and back icons (>> and <<) to the words “back” and “next”
