Connect your Android Device or Chromebook to ResWiFi

Before You Begin

BE SURE THAT YOU:

  1. Know your CruzID and Gold password.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the Responsible Use Policy.

CREDENTIALS FOR ALL DEVICES

  • Username: Your full UCSC email address (cruzid@ucsc.edu)
  • Password: Your Gold password

Manual Setup

The instructions below are for manually configuring an Android smartphone/tablet. This method is only recommended for users comfortable with setting configurations over several steps. Please note that menu names may vary by manufacturer.

STEP 1: Download and install the CA certificate

Note: If you already installed the CA certificate for eduroam, you do not need to repeat this step.

  1. Click here to download the CA certificate.
  2. Open your device's Settings app.
  3. Navigate to SecurityEncryption & credentials.
    • This may be titled other security settings on some devices.
  4. Under Credential storage, tap Install a certificateWi-Fi certificate.
  5. Navigate to where you downloaded the certificate in Step 1.
    • This will typically be your Downloads folder.
  6.  Tap the ca.crt file
    • If prompted, name it UCSC.

STEP 2: Connect to ResWiFi

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Select Wi-FiResWiFi.
  3. Enter the following details
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • Identity (username): your UCSC email (cruzid@ucsc.edu)
    • Password: your Gold password
    • CA certificate: select UCSC/NOC/ResWiFi from the dropdown
    • Online certificate status: select don't validate from the dropdown
    • Domain: ucsc.edu
    • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    • Anonymous identity: leave blank
    • MAC address type: Phone MAC

Chromebook Setup

The instructions below are for configuring a Chromebook.

STEP 1: Download and install the CA certificate

Note: If you already installed the CA certificate for eduroam, you do not need to repeat this step.

  1. Click here to download the CA certificate.
  2. In the Chrome address bar, type: chrome://settings/certificates
  3. Click on the ‘Authorities’ tab and click ‘Import
  4. From the downloads folder select ca.crt and click open
  5. Check the box for ‘Trust this certificate for identifying websites’ and press ‘OK
Note: You must sign out and back into your chromebook as Certificate Trust settings take effect in your next login

STEP 2: Connect to ResWiFi

  1. Go to your WiFi settings 
  2. Select ResWiFi.
  3. Enter the following details*
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • EAP Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    • Server CA certificate: select UCSC-NOC Certificate Authority from the dropdown
    • Identity: your UCSC email (cruzid@ucsc.edu)
    • Password: your Gold password

*You may leave any other field not mentioned above blank. 


Using JoinNow app (Android)

The instructions below are for connecting your Android smartphone or tablet using SecureW2 JoinNow.

  1. Click here to download SecureW2 JoinNow from the Play Store.
  2. Open the JoinNow MultiOS app.
  3. From the menu, select Search and Setup.
  4. Under Domain, enter ucsc.edu.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. When prompted to choose an option, tap ResWiFi.
  7. Enter your UCSC email (cruzid@ucsc.edu) and your Gold password.
  8. Tap Continue.
  9. When prompted to save the network, tap Save.
  10. Your Android smartphone/tablet is now configured for ResWiFi*.

*You can configure ResWiFi off-campus or in a non-ResWiFi location. However, your Android smartphone/tablet will only connect in supported locations. Not sure where ResWiFi is offered? Check here. If you are unable to connect on eduroam, ResWiFi, and/or ResWiFi-Devices with your UCSC email and Gold password on any device you may need to reset your Gold password. 


Wired Residential Network

Some residential buildings do not offer ResWiFi, or only as a supplemental service in hallways/lounges. To connect in these locations, consult our Wired Access page. Not sure which connection type you have? Check here.


Family Student Housing

Students at FSH should connect to ResWiFi for the most secure connection. Spouses and children (without a CruzID) may connect to the FSH-Family network. To connect to FSH-Family on an Android smartphone or tablet:

  1. Open your device's Settings and select Wi-Fi.
  2. Select FSH-Family from the list of the networks.
  3. Enter the passphrase SlugFamily.
  4. Tap Connect.
