Physical Server Hosting

Centralized physical hosting of computer and storage equipment is available at two locations. Best for those that require their own hardware to run workload and/or store data. The primary ITS data center is a contracted remote colocation facility.

This professionally run, purpose-built facility is designed to provide a controlled environment with power, cooling, security, connectivity and technical services to store and operate servers, storage devices, network equipment, and other hardware.

There is an option for on-campus physical hosting, which requires more rigorous steps for approval. Space and power are limited.

Benefits and Features

Primary off-site data center

  • Capacity: Flexible with abundant ability for expansion. Facility is divided into proprietary rooms that are allocated only for our usage.
  • Reliable and sustainable power: Robust power supplies with redundant power feeds, backup generators, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to maintain continuous operations even during power outages. Powered by hydroelectricity.
  • Enhanced security: Enhanced physical protection through video surveillance and restricted access to the data center environment. Firewall and virtual private network (VPN).
  • Physical infrastructure: Raised floors, advanced cooling systems, backup power, fire suppression, low disaster risk, and physical security measures
  • Connectivity: 100Gbps link to campus with multiple redundant connections for reliability.

On-campus data center

  • Power reliability and redundancy: Generator-backed power for half of the data center. The other half is supported by a 15-minute battery backup.
  • Security: Restricted access.
  • Fire suppression: Water fire sprinkler system.
  • Network: Redundant network including local exit.
  • This location has limited capacity to 200kW.

Requirements

All data centers

  • Users must follow data center standards.
  • This service is appropriate for P1-P4 data, excluding EAR/ITAR and PCI
  • Architecture Review Board system review required prior to placement.

Additional for on-campus data center

  • Requires approval from ITS leadership prior to installation.
  • Physical equipment must also meet technical requirements that require local hosting.

Eligibility

Faculty, Staff

Cost

No cost. Physical hosting is subsidized by the Information User (IU) funding model.
