Software Retirement 2021

This is a list of several applications that have retired and will be unsupported by their vendor. This means they will no longer receive security vendor updates. Unsupported software, by UC security policy, needs to be removed from UC computers. When requested by UCSC clients, technical staff should install the latest supported version.

Adobe Flash Player

Other open standards, such as HTML5 and WebGL have matured and serve as a viable replacement for Flash. Adobe is blocking Flash content from playing in Flash Player starting January 12th, 2021. Endpoint Engineering will begin to uninstall Flash Player from UCSC client computers in Feb. 2021 via BigFix.

ITS techs should uninstall Flash Player on sight at this point. If a client has a business reason to use it, please forward their request as a ticket to EE.

These versions of Acrobat and Acrobat Reader retired in July of 2020. UCSC clients should update to a more current version (Acrobat 2017 or 2020). Endpoint Engineering will begin to uninstall the retired version and in Feb. 2021 via BigFix.

Office 2016 for the Mac

Microsoft retired Office for the Mac 2016 in October 2020. UCSC clients should update to the latest version Office 365/2019. The minimum macOS for Office 365/2019 is 10.14 (Mojave). If a client is on a lower OS, then they should be updated to at least Mojave. If their hardware can not work on Mojave, ITS should be recommending an update to their computer.

Endpoint Engineering will begin to contact UCSC clients about uninstalling Office 2016 for the Mac in March 2021.

Office 2010 (Windows)

Microsoft retired Office 2010 for Windows in October 2020. This means there will be no more security updates. UCSC clients should update to the latest version Office 365/2019.

Endpoint Engineering will begin to contact UCSC clients about uninstalling Office 2010 in April 2021.

Note: There will be communications with all desktop support technicians and the Help Desk before EE uninstalls any client software for feedback. Once vetted, there will be additional communications for clients sent to Lisa Bono for the ITS New Items webpage.
